It had to be on the "to do" list this weekend and the Green Bay Packers checked off the inside linebacker position with their final pick of the 2019 draft.
Ty Summers of Texas Christian University was taken with the 226th overall choice in the seventh round.
The 6-2, 235 pound defender was an Honorable Mention All Big 12 player in his senior year after starting eight games splitting time at both linebacker and defensive end. He was pressed into playing end because of injuries but most of the time, manned the middle in the Horned Frogs 4-2-5 defensive alignment.
Summers did have a history of shoulder troubles early in his college career though, tearing the labrum and requiring surgery on both his right and left shoulders before the end of his sophomore season.
He said he wore harnesses to protect the shoulders but did away with those and was able to play without them, pain free his last two years at TCU.
Summers was a decorated high school quarterback in San Antonio, passing for over 2000 yards and rushing for another 1773, scoring 47 touchdowns his senior year. He was given a look at quarterback by Rice University but Summers knew he was a bit too big for that position at the next level.
He prefers the defensive side of the ball but said his quarterback days help him to understand how that player thinks and what offenses are trying to do.
Summers will have a chance to be a run plugging inside backer for Green Bay with Jake Ryan having departed in free agency.
