"Silent Lucidity" was released by Queensryche off their 1990 album Empire. It was the biggest hit for the band charting at #9 on the Hot 100 and #1 on the U.S. Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart. It was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Rock Song" in 1992, the band performed the song on at the awards show with an orchestra, but it didn't win. The music video, however, won an MTV Viewer's Choice Award.
The song was written by then guitarist, Chris DeGarmo, about lucid dreams. A lucid dream is one in which you know you're dreaming and you can control certain parts. The inspiration came from a book DeGarmo read called Creative Dreaming which explains how to tap into your subconscious mind, kinda like Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie Inception.
Lead singer, Geoff Tate, thought the song was beautiful. The band wanted to add it to the album, but their producer, Peter Collins, didn't think it was well developed so insisted they work on a different song for the album instead. The band put their foot down and instead of working on a different song as recommended they turned "Silent Lucidity" into the hit song we know and love. It is the only song the band ever had that made the Hot 100 in the U.S.
