Stone Temple Pilots lead singer, Scott Weiland, wrote "Big Empty" for
The Crow
soundtrack. It was originally called "Only Dying," but when the star of the movie, Brandon Lee, accidentally died during filming they changed it to "Big Empty."
STP liked the song so much they decided to put it on their second album
Purple.
It reached #7 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and #3 on the Album Rock Tracks chart.
Weiland lays out a series of images in this song from a vague story about a car, a cigarette and a conversation. He once said that many of his lyrics are just a series of things that come to mind and it is up to the listener to piece them together. The line "Conversations kill" is in reference to how saying the wrong thing in a conversation with a loved one can change everything and quite possibly destroy a relationship. Sometimes when Weiland was asked about lyrics he would sometimes make a comment making them sound superficial and in regards to this song he said it's about sex in a car, but anyone who is a fan of STP knows there is nothing superficial about Weiland's lyrics. The line "Her name is what it means," in fact, is a very poetic reference to drugs and that heroin was his heroine.
