STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) -- The bids for the upgrades to K.B. Willett Ice Arena are being awarded.

On Monday night, Stevens Point's Board of Public Works will be awarding the bids for the improvements to the K.B. Willet Ice Arena to be installed over the summer. The city will be improving the ice systems by replacing the compressor system, replacing the concrete floor and the piping. The boards and glass will also be replaced along with the ice systems. The press box will also be getting an upgrade as it will be expanded.

Tom Schrader, Stevens Point's Parks, Recreation and Forestry Director spoke to WSAU News about the improvements to the arena. He describes the changes that will be coming to the press box. "It'll probably be about another 10 feet in length and probably 10 feet in width. Just enough to get about five or six more people up in there. And then we're updating some of the electrical hookups to that area too."

Schrader feels that the biggest savings for the arena will be the new compressor system, as the original system from 1981 was bought used. "I think our biggest savings is going to be the efficiency of the compressors as electrical use. And the fact that what we're going to is a glycol system instead of freon R-22. The floor itself was starting to leak in areas, so it needed to be replaced anyway."

The Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department is recommending Finedorf and Sons for the ice system, Eagle Construction for the press box, and Becker for the boards and glass. Schrader says they are recommending these bids to the city for multiple reasons. "They're the low bid and they're all qualified. So that was a good bonus for us that they're all qualified and they did have low bids."

The bids will be awarded at tonights Board of Public Works meeting at 6:30 pm. Construction will begin on the arena at the beginning of April 2019 and will be finished before Labor Day.
