MARSHFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- The first holiday season for Marshfield's new Wenzel Family Plaza gets off to a 'glowing start' Wednesday evening with the lighting of a 20-foot Christmas tree which will serve as a focal point for Marshfield's downtown during the holidays.

According to event organizer Mark Davis, "On Wednesday night we are planning to have the tree lighting at 6:30, to not only light up the tree, it's also going to help kick-start the holiday season."

The event was inspired by some other well-known tree lighting ceremonies, Davis said.  "We kind of got inspiration from the Rockefeller Christmas lighting in New York City.  Obviously, it's not going to be on as grand of a scale, but we wanted to have our own little special twist to it."

The local community can get involved too.  Businesses can sponsor and decorate one of ten smaller trees that will line the plaza walkways through the holiday season.  "There's going to be 10 six-foot trees along the sidewalk of the plaza," Davis explained, "and each business has an opportunity to sponsor one tree."

Marshfield's Wenzel Family Plaza will remain lit-up every night through New Year's Eve.
