MADISON, WI (MetroSource-WSAU)  Madison is seeing record-breaking absentee voter turnout ahead of next week's election. The city has already beaten early voting records in comparable elections.

Madison City Clerk Maribeth Witzel-Behl reported that 32,000 absentee ballots have been requested. 28,000 have been used to cast votes, 22,000 of which were cast in-person.

Around the state more than 400,000 absentee ballots have been requested, according to Reid Magney, a spokesman for the state elections committee. He says that is high for a midterm election, but is less than the general election of 2016.

Some of the interest in early voting may also be centered on the non-binding marijuana questions which are on the ballot in 16 counties around the state.

In Wisconsin voters can request an absentee ballot for any reason. In many other states a voter must certify that they will be out-of-town or are unable to get to their polling place on Election Day.
