SCHOFIELD, WI (WSAU) -- The first event for Central Wisconsin's 10K with a Cop is Thursday at D.C. Everest Middle School.

The Everest Metro Police Department and the EMPD Blue Hearts are teaming up with Run to Remember LA to start the Central Wisconsin 10K with a Cop chapter. The program began in Southern California and helps to build relationships between law enforcement and the community with a focus on students.

The program came to the area when individuals from EMPD Blue Hearts and the Everest Metro Police Department met a group of uniformed runners who presented a flag for fallen officer Detective Jason Weiland in Washington D.C. for Police Week. The relationship between the group and local officers continued as they came to Wausau in the summer and ran in full uniform in the Wausau Marathon.

The Everest Metro Police Department and the Blue Hearts decided they wanted to give back to the community through the 10K with a Cop program. The event on Thursday will be a training event for law enforcement and middle school students.

The program is beginning at the D.C. Everest Middle School but will be brought to additional schools in both the Everest and Wausau School Districts. The schools will join the training program before the first 10K with a Cop event planned to take place in the late spring 2019.
